Description

Cottage in the Park is a cottage dated 1617, located in Great Witcombe. It features large random squared and dressed limestone blocks, with later extensions made of coursed squared and dressed limestone, partly rendered, and brick stacks. The building has a rectangular main body with extensions to the left and right gable ends and at the rear left. It is 1½ storeys high and has two Cotswold dormers on the main body.

The cottage includes a two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement window with an ovolo-moulded mullion on the ground floor to the left, and a similar window in the dormer above. There is also a two-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement with a hollow-moulded mullion on the lower right, along with a similar window in the dormer above that features a sundial datestone with a moulded hood over it. The central entrance has a glass door with glazing bars set within a round-headed surround, complete with a keystone and imposts, all situated in a gabled brick-built porch.

At the rear, there is one two-light and one three-light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casement, both with hoods, and an early single-light casement. All windows in the main body have leaded panes, with some retaining early latches. A 20th-century two-light casement is found in the lean-to on the right gable end, while the extension to the left gable end has a fixed 20th-century two-light casement and a part-glazed 20th-century double door. The main body features gable-end stacks with dogtooth brickwork at the top of each shaft. According to D. Verey, the cottage originally had a round stone chimney and a stone spiral staircase. The interior has not been inspected.
