Description

Old Bell Cottage and the British Legion Club is a building originally comprising a row of houses, now functioning as a house and a club. It dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, with part of it altered in 1953 to create the clubhouse. The structure is made from random and coursed rubble limestone, featuring ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof. It is two stories high with an attic, and the row steps down the hill.

The front of Old Bell Cottage, located on the right, has two upper floor casements with chamfered mullions beneath a combined hoodmould; there is a three-light window to the left and a two-light window to the right. On the ground floor, there is a three-light restored casement next to a lean-to porch. A central gabled roof dormer is mounted at the eaves. The slightly projecting section of the building to the left has a large upper floor casement with mullions and transoms beneath an earlier hoodmould, and two timber ground floor casements grouped under a hoodmould. To the left, there is an original two-light casement with separate hoodmoulds for each floor. Further south, the part altered for the British Legion features three two-light casements, a large blocked three-centred archway with a small oval window above, and a circular upper floor window. Ridge-mounted chimneys are present. At the north end, there is a gable end with a central porch, a two-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement above, flanked by 20th-century single-light casements. The interior has not been inspected.
