Description
Britannia is a house located in a row of buildings in Bisley Village, dating from the late 17th century, with alterations and enlargements made in the mid-18th century and further changes in the early to mid-19th century. The structure is built from coursed rubble limestone and features an ashlar chimney and a stone slate roof. It stands three stories tall with an attic.
The front of the building shows the earliest part on the left, where the original gable line is still visible. Extensive rebuilding has enlarged the elevation and added a sprocketed hipped roof with coved stone eaves. The windows are mixed in style. There is a roughly central doorway with a 6-panel door beneath a rendered lintel that extends over a 19th-century casement to the left. To the right, there is a bowed shop window with glazing bars. Above, the two-window fenestration consists of 2-light chamfered mullioned casements, except for a 20-pane sash window on the middle floor to the left. A central gabled roof dormer is also present.
On the north side, there is a doorway at the middle floor level with a concrete lintel and a 6-panel door. Above this, there is a 3-light chamfered mullioned casement with a hoodmould. The half gable above features dovecote perches and a gable-mounted chimney with a cavetto cap. The rear of the building has a gabled wing. The interior has not been inspected.
