Description
Drakes House is an early 17th-century house situated in a row, with an outbuilding formerly used as a shop. A chimney bears the date 1682, and the house has undergone alterations in the 18th and 20th centuries. The construction is primarily of random rubble limestone with timber framing and smooth render, featuring an ashlar chimney and a stone slate roof.
The house is two storeys with an attic, and includes a cross wing at its north end, with a single-storey outbuilding beyond. The front elevation features a projecting gable end of what was likely one of two original cross wings; the further north wing was originally part of a demolished market hall. The jettied gable of the surviving wing has a central doorway flanked by casement windows. A single casement window is positioned on each floor above the doorway. To the right, the elevation is ashlar-faced with chamfered mullioned casement windows of single and two lights. The doorway to the right has a three-centred head and a six-panel door. The sides of the cross wing are of coursed and random rubble, with evidence of blocked window openings on the north side. The range continues to the left, with a small stair light and a gable end with a dated chimney.
The outbuilding, originally part of the house, is now partially demolished but retains a round-arched moulded doorway with imposts, keystones, and a rusticated arch. Above the doorway is a frieze with a lozenge pattern. The rear features a gabled wing with an ashlar chimney. The interior has not been inspected.
