Description

This is a row of three dwellings located in Knapp Lane, dating to the 17th century. The buildings are constructed of squared and coursed marlstone, with some brick on the first floors of numbers 15 and 17. Number 13 has a pantile roof, while numbers 15 and 17 have a double roman tile roof, with a hipped outer end. The arrangement suggests a lofty house unit with a steep pitched roof and a main stack to the right-hand gable, alongside two lower units under a lower pitched roof, potentially originally subordinate to number 13. A stack is also present on the gable of number 15, adjoining number 13.

Number 13 is three storeys and one window wide. It has a 4-light modern casement window under a concrete lintol on ground floor, and a 3-light casement in a wooden frame above. The left-hand gable features 3-light casements in wooden surrounds at first and second floors, above a new casement window at ground floor. Access is currently through a modern door at the rear.

Number 15 is two storeys and four windows wide, featuring 3-light casements in wood with mullions under wooden lintols on the ground floor, and further 3-light and 2-light casements above. The central entrance is through a heavy plank door within a moulded surround, including a cambered top. Number 17 is two storeys and one window wide, with 2-light casements, and an entrance through a modern opening in the right gable.

The cellar of number 13 contains heavy, deep-chamfered beams. A large open fireplace with a deep bressumer is said to have been concealed by a modern fireplace in the ground floor main room. A shed wall, possibly containing remains of wattle and daub fill, is located between the main room and the kitchen. Numbers 15 and 17 were formerly thatched.
