Description
Upper Knapp Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is primarily constructed of squared and coursed marlstone, with some rubble, and features a stone slate roof that was in the process of being renewed at the time of the survey. The building is a large complex, initially designed in an L-shape, with a two-storey porch on the northeast side and a gabled cross wing at the northwest end. There are large external stacks at the outer southeast end facing Knapp Lane, as well as on the southwest side, and two gable stacks on the garden side.
The entrance front is two and a half storeys high, with a gable on the left that has two 2-light casements under wooden lintels and a panelled 2-light leaded casement in the gable. To the left of the porch, there is a central unit with a 4-light casement under a combination of 2- and 1-light casements, and a 2-light casement above the entrance. The gable on the right features a series of 4, 3, and 2-light casements from the ground floor upwards. All the casements are made of wood and lack drips. The main door, located in the porch, is a heavy plank set in a moulded surround, with the outer opening featuring a very deep plain stone lintel with a drip above.
Inside, the farmhouse has three arch-braced trusses over the central space and a heavy panelled screen with 125 mm wide chamfered framing, with panels measuring 600 x 750 mm. There are stone steps leading to the cellars in the northwest part of the building. Some damage has occurred to the structure in the past due to one of the roof principals being cut through.
