Description
The Five Cornock monuments, located about 4 meters north of the Burley monument in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, are five chest tombs arranged in a row, dedicated to the Cornock family. The earliest discernible inscriptions, from south to north, are: William Cornock, who died in 1803; Nicholas Cornock, who died in 1700, likely in the mid 18th century; John (?) Cornock, who died in 1729; John Cornock, who died in 1794; and Mary Cornock, who died in 1765.
The first tomb is made of limestone, featuring a flat top, a moulded plinth, and capping on a large tooled base with indented corners. The ends have a diamond frieze and a fielded oval panel on the east side, with an urn on a moulded panel to the west. The sides display moulded panels with swag and two rosettes.
The second tomb is also limestone, with a flat top that has a plain edge and moulded capping below, along with a moulded plinth on a plain base. Its sides are divided into two fielded panels with relief dividing strips.
The third tomb is made of stone, featuring a flat top with a plain edge and moulded capping below, and a wide moulded plinth. The ends have wreathed oval panels with reliefs in the spandrels. The south side has two plain fielded panels, while the north side has a large wreathed oval with flanking cherub heads, swag, and spiral reliefs.
The fourth tomb is limestone, with a flat top, a moulded plinth (possibly made of a different stone), and capping on a plain base. The ends have a plain frieze with a central rosette and a figure of a lady in an oval panel. The sides feature moulded oval panels with high relief festoons.
The fifth tomb is also limestone, with a flat top that has additional moulding along the upper edge, a moulded plinth and capping on a large plain base. It has quarter balusters and sunk rectangular end panels with rounded projections at the top, while the sides have plain fielded inscription panels.
