Description

Hillworth House, located on Gloucester Street in Painswick, is an early 19th-century building constructed of limestone ashlar with a stone slate roof and rebuilt gable stacks. The house has two and a half storeys and a part cellar, featuring three windows. The cellar opening is low and positioned to the left in the plinth. On the ground floor, there are 12-pane sash windows flanking a recessed 4-pane part-glazed door, which is accessed by two steps and framed by a lead surround with a cornice and apron above, along with a recessed foot scraper.

Above the ground floor, there is a first-floor string course supporting a 4:16:4-pane oriel window with intersecting Gothick bars, a 16-pane sash window of the same style, and a 12-pane sash window with a straight cornice. The roof features two segmental-headed 2-light dormers. The left return of the house has two chamfered surround lights leading to the roof space, one of which is blocked and the other has a 19th-century iron casement. At mid-level, there is a central pointed blocked opening and a double chamfered opening to the left. A door is set deep to the left, with a small single light to the right.

To the left of the house is a square gate pier topped with a moulded cap and a ball finial, alongside a long stretch of rubble garden wall that is coped and swept.
