Description
No. 5 on School Road is a dwelling that was formerly known as The Shearmans Arms, dating from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with a roof made of stone slate and plain tiles. It consists of a complex block with two phases of construction, featuring a parallel range and a long return to the right that faces an access lane leading to Waterloo Mill.
The structure is two storeys tall, becoming three storeys on the return side, and has a total of four windows on the upper floor. These windows are sashes with glazing bars, set flush with the wall and placed within segmental arches that have keystones. The ground floor features late Victorian openings for the Smoke Room and Bar, including a door with a hood supported by brackets, which is linked to a window beneath a broad discharge arch with stone voussoirs. The return section has a three-storey unit with three windows, also sashes with glazing bars set in broad sash boxes. This building serves as an important visual landmark at the end of Ludgate Hill.
