Description
This is a barn and cattle shed built in 1846 for Reverend John Davies, located approximately 150 meters northeast of Old Overtown House. The structure is made of coursed rubble limestone with ashlar dressings and has roofs covered with concrete tiles and asbestos slate. The barn features seven bays and includes porches on both the east and west sides, while the five-bay cattle shed with a loft to the west forms an L-shape.
The central west barn porch has a parapet gable and a dated keystone above a segmental arch, which leads to a doorway with plank doors. There is also a lean-to porch on the east side. The main barn wall has three slit vents on either side of the porch, each fitted with a cast-iron grille. The east side has pitching holes for the loft. The barn ends are gabled with parapets and slit vents. The south-facing cattle shed features two wide, low segmental arched openings, a central loft doorway, and two smaller pitching holes on the sides. The gabled west end of the cattle shed has a two-light ovolo moulded ground floor casement and a single-light window above, both likely reused.
Inside, part of the barn has an inserted loft, and there is a seven-bay tie-beam truss roof with bolted collars and two rows of purlins. The loft of the cattle shed is partially plastered, and it has a five-bay collar truss roof with a single row of purlins. Below, there are two unequal rooms designated for loose yard cattle. The building is situated on a slope, making it an impressive sight and a fine example of mid-19th century utilitarian farm buildings.
