Description

The small barn and cattle shed at Preece Moor Farm is a field barn and adjoining cattle shed dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed from flat, unsquared sandstone rubble, with no quoins on the barn and pecked ashlar quoins on the cattle shed. The building features a slate roof, with part of the cattle shed covered in corrugated iron.

The barn has three bays and is attached to a three-bay cattle shed at a right angle. The yard-facing side has central double doors that rise to the wallplate, with a single slit air vent on each side and a door that is set up a ramp from the yard. On the right side, there is a low small doorway, although the stonework on one side is partly collapsed. Inside, the right-hand bay is set about 600mm lower than the rest of the barn, originally separated by a 750mm wall from the threshing floor. The barn features angle-strut pine trusses and has a blocked pitch-hole in the left gable.

The cattle shed has three square timber posts forming the front, with two tie-beam trusses inside and a hipped roof at the end away from the barn. There are two surviving timber partitions between the cows, which are supported by timber ties. This structure is a good example of a field barn and its associated shed, and the yard wall remains intact.
