Description

These steps lead to the churchyard, along with associated railings and a boundary wall that adjoins Jaynes Court. The structure dates from the early 19th century, with the steps themselves having been restored in 1896. The steps are constructed of limestone, leading up in four unequal flights, approximately fifty steps in total. Inscribed on the top step of the second main flight are the words "SEEK THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE ABOVE,” and on the top step of the lowest flight, "THESE STEPS RESTORED 1896.” A boundary wall runs alongside the steps on the west side, featuring plain coping and a blocked square-headed doorway leading from one of the landings. The wall serves as an important visual feature on the west side of the churchyard. Iron railings are positioned on the east side of the steps and are terminated by a stone pier.
