Description
Jayne’s Court is a large detached house, largely dating from around 1715, with the incorporation of earlier elements and early 19th-century additions. It is constructed of ashlar and random rubble limestone, with ashlar chimneys and a combination of plain tile and stone slate roofs. The house follows a double-depth plan with a two-story service wing to the northwest.
The east front has a five-window arrangement of 18-pane sash windows, each with a keyed, moulded architrave and bullnosed sill. Keystone detailing links the ground floor windows with a moulded string course, while upper floor keystones are integrated into the moulded and coved eaves. The quoins are chamfered and alternate. A low central doorway features a keyed architrave, pilasters with moulded caps, and a pair of six-panel fielded doors. The roof is hipped at the south end and gabled to the north, with a prominent chimney having an entablature top and a central pilaster on each face. Two gabled dormers are also present. A single-window two-story extension sits to the right.
The south side originally had a five-window sash arrangement, but this was reduced to three windows with the addition of a large, two-story, round-fronted bay. This bay features three curved 12-pane sashes on each floor, with glazed doors in the center of the ground floor. The details of the architraves, keystones, eaves, and quoins are consistent with the east front. A ridge-mounted chimney with pilasters is also present, along with two gabled dormers.
The west side includes a return wing from the original 1715 house, with a projecting chimneystack and a single 18-pane sash window on each floor. The rest of the west side appears to be a reconstruction of an earlier house, incorporating late 18th or early 19th-century sash windows. A service wing projects forward to the left and seems to have been built in two phases, featuring a large tripartite sash window and a round-arched doorway. A glazed gallery on the north side of the service wing connects to the north end of the east range.
Inside, the original staircase from the east range was removed and reconstructed in a newly formed stair hall. One room in the southwest corner contains an Adam-style fireplace with attached Ionic columns. Jayne’s Court was built on the site of the medieval Nether Manor house. A unique cockpit with a dovecote is located in the yard to the southwest.
