Description

Laggers Barn is an 18th-century field barn with attached sheds for yard cattle, located in Mitcheldean. The barn is constructed from random rubble red sandstone with larger quoins and features a slate roof, although one shed has a corrugated iron roof. The barn has seven bays, with five-bay sheds at right angles on each end, which enclose a yard.

The yard elevation of the barn includes a central pair of boarded doors leading to the threshing floor, which rises to the eaves. To the left, there are two pairs of irregularly spaced slit air vents, and to the right, two vents near the eaves, along with two small square openings with timber lintels. There is also a boarded door in a timber frame on the right. The end of the lean-to against the gable of the barn is visible. The roof features a parapet gable on the right, although the copings are missing. The similar gable on the left was removed in the late 20th century when a large vehicular access was created in the wall below.

Internally, the barn has a collar and tie-beam truss with tapered principal rafters and two pairs of purlins with a square ridge. The low walls on either side of the threshing floor have been removed. There is a rear door to the threshing floor that is lower and narrower, with a cambered head and timber frame. The sheds are open-fronted with chamfered timber posts, and the underside of the wall-plates is also chamfered.

In the left shed, one bay has been built up in brick as a loose box, and one post has been renewed. The trusses in this shed feature a tie beam with a nailed plank 'king post'. In the right shed, three posts have been replaced, and it has tie beam trusses. This shed is set back beyond the barn, against the end wall of a lean-to that is likely of earlier date.

The yard is completed by walls that enclose a trapezium shape, with gates on each side. At the end of the yard, there is a stone water tank for cattle, making this a very complete group. The barn is prominent in the landscape from across the valley.
