Description

The barn at Pigeon Box Farm is a free-standing structure dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble or timber framing, faced with weatherboarding and some brick nogging, topped with a double Roman tiled roof. The barn has a rectangular gabled shape and sits on a high plinth wall. The entrance features a plank door that is accessed by five stone steps, leading to a threshold that is at half the height of the plinth wall. Above this door and to the right is a small loading door. The left gable has a boarded gable, but the main wall section is currently protected by a corrugated plastic sheet, with a loading door above it. The south gable wall is made of full-height rubble and was formerly attached to other farm buildings that have since been demolished.

Inside, the barn has three and a half bays with heavy framing, square panels, straight corner braces, and jowled posts. The roof features heavy pegged principals with collars and ties, while most of the purlins and rafters are later additions, although some original purlins remain in a two-purlin trenched configuration. The half-bay at the south end appears to be a later addition, as parts of the end wall framing are still visible up to the plate level at the first truss position.
