Description

This is a row of four estate cottages built in the early 19th century. The cottages are constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof. They have a long, rectangular plan, with later extensions to the rear. The facades of the cottages are symmetrical, each with two windows. The roofs feature eight half-dormers with two-light stone-mullioned casement windows to the first floor. Similar casements, with stopped hoods, are found on the ground floor, along with a two-light casement with a stopped hood at the right-hand gable end, also at first-floor level. Four half-dormers are present on the rear first floor. The cottages have three 20th-century part-glazed doors and one 19th-century plank door. Each door is protected by a canopy with moulded margins and hipped upper-capping stones, supported by moulded stone brackets. Stone stacks are present at the gable ends and along the axial line, with the exception of those on ashlar plinths, which have been restored in dressed stone in the 20th century. Flat coping is visible to the gable ends and dormers at the front, along with moulded kneelers. The interiors have not been inspected. The cottages are owned by the National Trust.
