Description
This pair of gatepiers, along with a gate, is located on the south perimeter wall of the Barnsley Park estate and dates from the mid to late 19th century. The gatepiers are made of ashlar stone and are square, standing on bases with elaborately moulded cornices and pyramidal caps featuring carved corners. They reach a height of approximately 2.5 to 3 meters. Between the gatepiers is a single large wooden gate that showcases decorative turned woodwork.
On either side of the gate, there is a coursed and dressed stone coped wall that curves down to about 1 meter in height, extending forward on both sides for about 3 meters to connect with the main perimeter wall. To the left of the piers, before the wall begins to curve, there is a small timber gate that matches the design of the larger gate. This small gate is supported by a curved wrought iron structure that holds a wrought iron coat of arms.
