Description

The Thatched Cottage, located in Batsford Park Arboretum, is a former dairy that has been converted into a detached house. It dates from the late 19th century and was built under the patronage of Lord Redesdale. The cottage is constructed from ashlar limestone with timber-framed gables that have rendered infill, topped with a thatched roof and ashlar stacks.

The building features an Arts and Crafts style and has a plan consisting of two parallel blocks, with the right-hand block slightly staggered forward. The twin-gabled facade includes a projecting 'patio' on the right, which is enclosed by a wall approximately 1 meter high, supported by timber columns above. A similar 'patio' is located at the rear of the same block. The windows display irregular fenestration, including a 6-light wood mullioned casement on the left and a 5-light wood mullioned casement below, which is supported on curved brackets. There is a part-glazed door leading from the patio in a flush surround, and to the right, a 2-light wood mullioned casement with a single external shutter. Additionally, there is a set of four octagonal stacks arranged in a square just below the ridge of the left-hand block. The interior has not been inspected.
