Description
The Hare and Hounds is an inn that dates from the mid-18th century and 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof, and features stumps of ashlar stacks that have been repaired in brick. The building has a rectangular plan for the 18th-century section, with later extensions that obscure the central bay of the south front. There are additional extensions to both gable ends and a long lean-to extension at the rear, along with a stable block positioned at right angles to the southwest corner of the main structure.
The main body of the inn is two-storeys high. The original 18th-century range had a facade with three windows, which is now partly obscured, while the 19th-century extension to the right has two windows, and there is a single-bay extension to the left. The 18th-century range features two and three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements, one of which has a stopped hood and another with the remains of a hood. The right-hand extension has one two-light and one three-light casement on the first floor. There is a 20th-century plank door with fillets leading to a gabled 20th-century porch, and two sash windows are located on the gable end facing the main road. The left gable end has a plank door and a pitching door leading to its extension. Gable-end stacks are present on the 18th-century range. At the time of the last survey in September 1986, some slates were missing from the roof of the stable block. The interior has not been inspected.
