Description
West End is a house located in Northleach with Eastington, dating from the mid-17th century, with a later kitchen extension at the rear. The building is constructed from coursed roughly dressed limestone and features a low-pitched slate roof with two brick stacks. The main body has a rectangular plan and is three storeys high with a two-windowed facade, which was formerly twin-gabled.
The second floor is lit by two two-light stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods, while the first floor has three-light stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods. The ground floor was originally illuminated by two-light and four-light stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods, but the mullions for these windows have since been removed. To the left of the front door is a large plate glass window with a stopped hood. The front door, likely from the 19th century, is a plank door with fillets set within a flat-chamfered basket-headed surround on the right. The building has stacks at the gable ends of the main body, with the left-hand stack and a stack at the rear gable featuring moulded capping.
Inside, there is a basket-headed flat-chamfered stone fireplace on the ground floor and a similar fireplace with carved spandrels on the first floor. The ground floor has a spine beam with deep flat-chamfers and run-out stops. A through passage to the rear is decorated with painted panels that showcase a painter and decorator's samples of different types of painted wood graining, framed within a painted marbled surround. Fragmentary painted scenes that imitate framed pictures were formerly visible on the walls of the downstairs rooms but are now covered up. The wood graining and paintings are likely from the mid to late 18th century. The roof truss features curved principals.
