Description
The Old Forge is a house located at the end of a row in Northleach with West End, dating from the late 16th century to the early 17th century. It is constructed of roughly coursed limestone with strap pointing and features a jettied first floor supported by two visible timber uprights. The building has a stone slate roof and brick stacks. Its rectangular plan is oriented at right angles to the street. The street front is dated and initialled 'J.S. 1888', although this detail is not of special interest. There is a garage and store at the gable end, which is also not of special interest. The main body of the house is two storeys high and has nine metal casements arranged in a row, with horizontal glazing bars on the ground floor. Wood mullions are present at intervals between the casements, and large finely dressed stone blocks are located below the windows. A moulded stone element is incorporated into the wall on the upper left. To the right, there is a 20th-century door with glazing bars, and a two-light 20th-century metal casement with glazing bars is positioned to the right of the door. Inside, there is a spine beam and a 17th-century fireplace with a roll-moulded surround.
