Description
This is a pair of adjoining barns and a stable located approximately 25 meters northwest of Calcot Farmhouse, dating from around 1739. The barn at the eastern end features a datestone inscribed with 'A R / 1739' on the porch gable. The buildings are constructed from random roughly squared limestone with dressed stone quoins and have a stone slate roof. The long rectangular range includes a single projecting porch on the southeast side of both barns, with a lean-to extension to the right of each porch. The stable block is situated at the southwest gable end.
The porches have double plank doors and double-width doorways, although one doorway is now blocked, opposite a pitching window on the northeast gable end. There are square ventilation holes present. The stable is one and a half storeys high and was originally designed with three open-fronted bays, all of which have been blocked and fitted with 20th-century stable doors and casements. Stone steps lead up to a plank door on the right, which features an early thumb latch. The barn gables have flat coping.
Inside the barn that faces the road, there are five bays with original roof trusses that include collar and tie beams, along with 20th-century rafters and purlins. A dividing wall separates this barn from the adjoining four-bay barn, which also retains original collar and tie beam roof trusses but has 20th-century purlins and rafters. The buildings are situated on an elevated site, making them particularly prominent when viewed from the lane to the north.
