Description

The Hay Barn and shelter sheds are a Grade II listed building located on Hay Lane in Bibury. This late 18th-century barn is constructed of random rubble limestone and features roofs made of stone slate, Welsh slate, and corrugated asbestos. The barn has five bays and includes a southwest porch and outshuts, with shelter sheds extending to the left and right, creating three sides of a yard.

The central porch on the southwest side of the barn has a parapet gable and is flanked by outshuts that have catslide roofs, each with a plank door next to the porch. The barn's doorway features a timber lintel and mixed doorway filling, with a pigeon hole located in the gable apex. On the northeast side, there is a central barn doorway with a timber lintel and plank doors, topped by a lean-to hood and flanked by slit vents. Each gable end has a loft doorway with a timber lintel and plank door.

To the left, an attached wall connects to a shelter shed supported by dressed stone piers, with a stone vent in the southwest gable end. A similar shelter shed on the right turns the corner. Although the interior of the barn was not inspected, it likely has a collar and tie-beam truss roof. This isolated barn is characteristic of the typical set of attached shelter sheds found in the eastern Cotswolds.
