Description
Peddar's Way and Willann is a pair of cottages that were originally four cottages and a butcher's shop, dating from the 17th century. The building features squared-panel timber framing with rendered infill, set on a limestone rubble plinth.
Willann Cottage, on the left, has a thatched roof, with limestone slates where the thatch is cut away for dormers that also have limestone slate roofs. It has a brick chimney on the left side and an ashlar chimney on the right, with a brick chimney located behind. Peddars Way Cottage, on the right, has a limestone rubble wall on the left and two brick chimneys, one on the center right and another near the ridge on the left wall. This cottage has a tile roof, which was formerly thatch, and features two dormers with brick infill in the gables.
The left cottage was originally three cottages with the butcher's shop at the left end. It is a single storey with an attic, lit by three dormers; the left dormer has a sloping roof while the others are gabled. The windows consist of 2, 4, and 5-light metal casements, most of which have horizontal glazing bars. There are four doors: the left door is a plank stable door with a removable panel on the left and a shuttered window on the right, which was formerly a shop front; next is a plank door accessed by three steps; then a single step leads to another plank door with strap hinges on the right, topped by a depressed wood lintel; the last door is another plank door on the right. All doors are unpainted.
Peddars Way has a two-room plan with a cross passage. It is also a single storey with an attic and features two gabled dormers from the eaves. The windows include 2 and 3-light 20th-century casements with horizontal glazing bars, and to the left of the central doorway is a window with 20th-century wood casements with glazing bars. There is a painted plank door on the right, accessed by two steps and topped with a triangular metal hood.
Interior inspection is limited, but Willann contains a spice cupboard to the right of the fire with original butterfly hinges, while Peddars Way features 17th-century square panelling up to dado height in the corridor.
