Description
The animal shelter and stable, along with an adjoining stable and loft, are located to the north-west of the barn at Tarlton Farm. This structure dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and is built from rubble stone. The single-storey animal shelter and stable have a tile roof, except for a stone slate hip on the north-east corner. The stable with loft has a stone slate roof, which was in poor condition at the time of the survey in June 1985.
The animal shelter originally featured 11 open bays supported by timber posts on stone bases. Some of these bays also included dividing stone walls and wooden mangers at the rear. The stable on the north side contains seven stable doors, arranged in three pairs and one single door positioned at the angle under the shelter. The stable with loft has a loft door on the left, although the steps to access it have been removed, and there are two small boarded-over square openings on the right side of the first floor. The ground floor includes a plank door and a small square opening to the left, both featuring timber lintels, along with a wider nearly central opening leading up three stone steps, which has a timber lintel and a sliding corrugated door. The interior of this section was not accessible during the survey.
