Description

The Mill is a house incorporating a former corn mill, dating to the mid-to-late 18th century with additions from the early-to-mid 19th century. The mill building itself is dated 1858, bearing the inscription "SIR M.E.H.B. BART.". The structure is built of random rubble limestone with brick chimneys and stone slate roofs. It comprises a two-storey-with-attic mill block, an angled linking section, and a former row of houses set at right angles. The west side features a doorway with a timber lintel and two casements serving the mill. An addition dated 1844 incorporates a segmental arched loft doorway. The projecting house to the left has a south-facing elevation with two half-gables, each containing horizontal sliding sashes. The south gable of the mill has a parapet with a two-light attic casement and a datestone. The east side has two doorways leading to the mill, one above the other, with various timber fixed lights. A single casement is present on each floor of the linking section, with a leaded upper floor window, both with timber lintels. The house projecting to the right displays a mix of fenestration, including two tripartite ground floor sashes and three horizontal sliding upper floor sashes. A hipped porch is located in the angle between the linking section and the mill. Internally, the mill contains a complete set of corn milling machinery, rebuilt in the 19th century by Sir Michael Edward Hicks Beach and originally intended for corn milling, although the mill wheel is missing. The building holds a significant position at the south end of Main Street.
