Description
The Malt House is a large house that was originally a row of two houses, now connected to former maltings and warehousing. It dates from the mid-18th century, with early and mid-19th century additions. The earliest part of the building is roughcast rendered, while the later sections feature coursed and random rubble limestone. The chimneys have been rebuilt in brick, and the roof is covered with stone slate.
The building is two stories tall, with a single-storey section at the east end. The front has scattered casements on the earliest part, positioned to the left of a roughly central doorway that features a glazed door and a gabled porch. To the left of the doorway, there are timber cross windows with stone surrounds and flat arches, while to the right, there are three-light chamfered mullioned casements. The original gable ends have ridge-mounted chimneys.
To the right, there is an addition that has a two-window arrangement. This section includes 20th-century restored three-light mullioned casements with hoodmoulds on the ground floor, and iron casements in timber frames with stone flat arches on the upper floor. There is also a single casement with a timber lintel on the lower part of the right side. At the west end, a short return wing connects the building to the former maltings and warehousing. The interior has not been inspected. The Malt House is in an important position, closing the view up Main Street.
