Description
The gate piers, gates, and railings at the west entrance to Cowley Manor date from the mid-19th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. The structure features ashlar piers topped with cast iron railings. The gates and piers are connected to two quadrant walls that lead to the service wing and stable block. The square piers have banded rustications, which are interrupted by long rectangular fielded panels. They also have moulded capitals topped with large ball finials that replaced pedestals with Corinthian brackets at each corner, which previously supported griffin-like finials. The double gates are designed with iron twist uprights that ramp down at the center. On either side, there is a low wall with square columns at intervals, with the columns linked by cast iron railings that also ramp down at the center.
