Description
The Rectory, built in 1826 by Richard Pace of Lechlade for the Reverend William Hicks, is a group value II listed building situated in Coberley village. The building is constructed of ashlar with a slate roof, incorporating a small, flat-roofed 20th-century extension that is not of particular interest. The Rectory is arranged over two storeys and a cellar, presenting a symmetrical three-windowed facade. This facade features two large twelve-pane sash windows with triangular pediments, framing a projecting ashlar porch, also with a triangular pediment. The porch contains a part-glazed double doorway and a hall light with geometric glazing bars above. Smaller twelve-pane sashes are located on the first floor. The right-hand return wall exhibits a four-window arrangement with twelve-pane sashes to both ground and first floors, punctuated by decorative sunken panels between the window levels. The rear wall presents a similar three-windowed arrangement. A stable block, now demolished, was formerly attached to the left-hand return, which displays irregular fenestration: two small sash windows above and a single two-light casement with glazing bars below. The eaves are wide, supported by double brackets at intervals. The building also has axial and lateral stacks with wide cappings and small moulded brackets beneath, with a circular stair lantern rising from the central roof well. Inside, original features include a wooden staircase with stick balusters, a wreathed handrail, decorative brackets to the risers, and original six-panelled doors throughout.
