Description
Booker's is a former poorhouse that was later converted into four cottages and is now a single house. It dates from the mid-17th century and features a later extension. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with dressed stone quoins and has a stone slate roof on the east-facing pitch, with slate at the rear. There are remnants of two ashlar stacks, both raised in brick, and one rendered stack. The structure has a rectangular plan with the gable end facing the road and a lean-to extension at the rear.
It stands two storeys high, with a 1½ storey lean-to at the back. The ground floor has three 2-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned casements with horizontal glazing bars, showing traces of red colour wash. There are also 2-light fixed casements with horizontal glazing bars and dressed stone surrounds that infill former doorways. The first floor features two 4-light wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars. A central 20th-century plank door with a 20th-century timber lintel is set within a 20th-century rubble porch. Additionally, there are three plank doors with early hinges and thumb latches. The far left-hand doorway is located within an open-sided 20th-century porch, and to the right of this porch is a small reused trefoil-headed stone window. The building has three 2-light casements on both the ground and first floors, as well as gable-end and axial stacks.
While the interior has not been inspected, it is known to contain an open fireplace with a bressumer. The house is named after John Booker, who purchased it when the Coberley estate was sold in 1720.
