Description

Sandford School, formerly known as Seven Springs House, is a school building constructed in 1840 by William Hall. The structure features red brick that has been painted, with squared and dressed limestone quoins and a slate roof adorned with painted brick stacks. It has a rectangular plan and originally had more extensive services at the rear, which have since been demolished. The building stands two storeys high with an attic and has a symmetrical facade with four windows.

The facade showcases shaped gables that project forward to the left and right, with four-light stone-built canted bays on the ground floor of the gables. Tall three-light stone-mullioned casements containing two-pane sashes are situated between the two gables. The first floor features tall two-light stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods and steel casements. The shaped gables are illuminated by small two-light stone-mullioned casements with stopped hoods containing small two-pane sashes. There are also two two-light stone-built gabled eaves dormers with moulded kneelers and decorative roundels between the gables.

To the right, there is a flat-roofed conservatory entrance that is lit by tall stone-mullioned windows, featuring a 19th-century four-panelled door within a round-headed surround with a hood towards the rear. A Dutch gable with stone-mullioned casements projects forward to the right. The building has axial stacks and is topped with roll-moulded capping and ball finials on the gables.

Inside, some room divisions have been altered, and there is one classical style fireplace and one mannerist fireplace. The balusters of the staircase were replaced in the 20th century. Sandford School occupies a particularly prominent position at the top of a hill.
