Description
The Robert Briggs monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, commemorating Robert Briggs, senior, who died in 1709, and Edward Briggs, whose date of death is illegible. The tomb is made of limestone and features a moulded plinth. On the north side, there is a raised rectangular inscription panel with a moulded margin and water leaf decoration. It depicts a figure of a man in contemporary dress holding a hat in his left hand. There is also a figure of a woman holding flowers within an alcove formed by drapery, with a skull and palm leaves below.
The south side has a similar inscription panel, flanked by the figures of two women. The woman on the left is smaller and has an eroded swag above her, with a winged hourglass below, while the taller woman stands within an alcove formed by drapery. The tomb has lyre-shaped ends, with a cherub holding an open bible at the east end and cartouche-like decoration with fruit at the west end. The thick capping has a moulded margin. The full figures in contemporary dress make this monument particularly unusual.
