Description
Fairford United Church, formerly known as the Congregational Chapel, is a former Baptist Chapel built in 1853. It is set back from the street and constructed from thin coursed stone on a plinth, featuring dressed pilaster strips, a cornice, and a parapet wall adorned with antefixae and a central raised date stone. The building has a hipped slate roof and is a rectangular shape, with an attached room to the right, both being single storey.
The façade includes three round-headed long glazing bar sash windows with radial heads, all set in flush stone surrounds. The central window is smaller and is positioned above double doors, each featuring one moulded recessed panel and a radial fanlight, also in a flush stone surround. The room to the right has two long round-arched windows flanking a single plank door, which also has a radial fanlight, all within flush stone surrounds. The lower parapet of the building has a plat band instead of a cornice.
Inside, the chapel retains its galleries. Access to the church is via a path that crosses a burial ground, which contains an interesting group of tombs that are clearly visible from Milton Street.
