Description

The Edmonds monument is a chest tomb located about 8.5 meters north of the main door in the grounds of Fairford United Church. It dates from the late 18th century and is made of limestone. The tomb has a square shape topped with a large, very flat pitched cross-gabled cap that extends over a deep projecting cornice featuring plain modules. This cornice is supported by four squat, unfluted Doric corner columns, with a "stylobate" now at ground level. The monument includes inscriptions on plain panels, which are incised with a Greek key pattern at the corners. The inscriptions read "Edmonds 1789 (?)" on the west side, "John 1819" on the north side, and "Elizabeth 1842" on the east side. The design is unusual and complete, although it shows some weathering, particularly on the columns, and it strongly references the work of Ledoux. The dimensions of the monument are approximately 1,960 mm by 2,010 mm and it stands about 1,630 mm high.
