Description
No. 1 Gosditch Street is a former wine merchants that has been converted into a hairdressers and flat. It likely dates from the mid to late 19th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone with ashlar dressings and features a hipped stone slate roof with a brick stack on the right side.
It is a two-storey structure with a two-window range. On the first floor, there are two three-light chamfered stone mullion windows fitted with single pane metal casements. The ground floor has an early 20th-century timber shop front that includes two large plate glass windows with Tudor arched heads and decorative carving in the spandrels. A plate glass door is located in the center, topped by a timber fascia and cornice.
Inside, the basement features clay paviors and a brick vault at the rear. The ground floor has an entirely 20th-century appearance, while the first floor has not been inspected. A photograph displayed inside, likely from the early 20th century, shows the ground floor with three doors and one three-light chamfered stone-mullion window similar to those on the first floor, all with relieving arches above. The building is included for its group value.
