Description

Numbers 11 and 11A on Gosditch Street in Cirencester are a house that has been converted into commercial and residential premises, dating from around 1830 to 1840. The front is made of limestone ashlar, while the right side features stucco and coursed limestone rubble, and the left side and rear are constructed from coursed squared limestone. The building has a hipped roof made of Welsh slate, with truncated stacks on both sides; the left stack is in ashlar, while the right has been rebuilt in concrete blockwork.

The property is three storeys high with a cellar and has a three-window range. On the first floor, there are three 6/6-pane sash windows in plain reveals with stone cills, and above them, three similar 3/3-pane sashes. The ground floor features two 6/6-pane sashes in moulded stone architraves with stone cills. The entrance has a moulded stone doorcase with attached Doric columns, topped with a blocking course over a frieze and cornice. A deep plinth contains two 20th-century plate glass sashes at basement level, and there is a 20th-century glazed door to the basement at the center under the front steps. The building has band courses over the ground and first floors, along with a moulded stone cornice and blocking course.

The contemporary railings, which alternate between full and half-height, are set on limestone bases and lead up to four stone steps that provide access to the front door. A foot gate on the left allows access to the basement stair, and there is a lifting section on the front right for deliveries to the basement.

Inside, only part of the ground floor has been inspected. It features a profile cantilevered stone well staircase that leads from the ground to the first floor, which is lit by an eight-sided lantern. The staircase has heavy stick balusters that match the lantern and a mahogany handrail. There are no fireplaces on the ground floor, and it is reported that there are no original fireplaces or door furniture on the upper floors. The ground floor also has heavily moulded architraves around the internal doors.
