Description
17 and 19 Gosditch Street is a pair of shops that have been combined into one, with a vacant flat above. The building likely dates from the 16th century, with 19th and 20th century additions at the rear. The front features render over timber-framing, while the sides have render over coursed limestone rubble, with rendered extensions at the back. It has a stone slate roof, a truncated stone stack on the right end, and a reconstituted stone stack on the left end of the rear range. The building has a continuous jetty design and stands two storeys tall with an attic, featuring a four-window range.
On the first floor, there are four 19th century two-light timber casements. The ground floor has four 19th century shop windows with moulded timber mullions and cills, with a recessed 19th century half-glazed door with an overlight on the right and a similar door on the left end. There are also two 20th century rooflights.
Inside, the ground floor has been opened up into a large space, featuring a massive chamfered cross beam in the center and heavy chamfered spine beams on each side, all with unstopped chamfers. To the right, there is a moulded stone fire-surround, likely from the 17th century, with a damaged lintel that was uncovered in 1990. There are two 19th century staircases leading from the ground to the first floor. A beam on the first floor landing to the right has a chamfered section over the staircase with diagonal-cut stops. The wall posts on the first floor front have jowled heads. There is a 19th century winder staircase leading from the first to the second floor, but the roof space is inaccessible, although parts of the principals and collars can be seen in closed trusses dividing the rooms on the right and far right.
