Description

Top Farmhouse is a house dating back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed and squared limestone, with a timber-frame section, and has a stone slate roof. A cross passage runs through the centre of the house, with a fireplace backing onto it, and a lateral chimney stack. The main range is a single-storey building with an attic, while a side wing rises to two storeys with an attic. The front elevation features a four-centred arched doorway with a chamfered surround and hood moulding. There is an ashlar chimney shaft to the right and a three-light window in the left-hand attic gable. Below this is a four-light window. The left-hand main gable has two- and three-light windows to the attic and upper floor respectively, and a 20th-century rectangular bay window below. The east wing was altered in the 20th century, with a partially restored close-studded timber frame to the upper floor, incorporating a small canted oriel. It also features a four-centred arched doorway and a mullioned, four-centred arched cross passage doorway. There are two attic gables, one with a two-plus-two-light window and the other with a three-light window, along with similar windows on the floor below. The chimneys have moulded caps, and the gables have cross-roll saddles. The interior was not inspected.
