Description

Moat House is a building that originally comprised three houses, now combined into one. It dates from the 17th century, with 18th-century additions and alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is built of coursed rubble limestone, featuring an ashlar chimney shaft and a stone slate roof. The original 17th-century section includes a cross passage with a lateral chimney stack and is a single storey with an attic.

There are two 2-storey wings from the 18th century, one of which was added later, creating a T-plan layout. On the north side, there is a stepped lateral chimney with a diagonal shaft and a moulded cap. This side also has a small window to the inglenook and a large round-ended projecting bread oven to the right. To the left, there is a 4-light ovolo moulded mullioned window. The building features scattered fenestration, including some 20th-century inserted windows, but generally retains 2-light casements.

The eaves have a parapet at the angle between the two wings, and the east doorway is designed with a 4-centred arch. The south wing has windows with 2 and 3 lights, with ovolo moulding on the ground floor. The east gable end has a 3-light window with 20th-century alterations to the upper floor, while the west gable end features a 3-light ovolo moulded window on both floors, complete with hood mouldings and a cross-roll saddle above. Inside, the 17th-century range displays chamfered beams and joists.
