Description
Canonbourne, also known as The Old Rectory, is a house that has been converted into flats. It was originally built around 1830 and extended in the 1860s to 1870s, with a conversion to flats occurring in the 20th century. The building is constructed of limestone with an ashlar front and features a slate hipped roof behind a parapet, along with ashlar stacks that have cornices.
The house has a rectangular double-depth plan, with a staircase located in a bay that is set back on the right side. The architectural style is classical. The exterior is two storeys high, with a symmetrical front consisting of two bays, a central bay, and two additional bays. The central bay is pedimented and projects forward, while there is a band at the first floor level, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are restored 12-pane sashes with stone cills, and the entrance is centrally located, featuring a stone portico supported by pilasters and an entablature. There is a blind bay that is set back on the right side. The rear of the building includes later 19th-century stone mullion windows and three attic windows with shouldered heads in small gables.
Inside, the front room to the right of the centre has a moulded ceiling cornice and a stone chimneypiece. The main staircase, located in the northeast bay, features an open string, stick balusters, and a moulded mahogany handrail that is wreathed over a turned curtail baluster. Other interior details include panelled doors and window shutters.
