Description

Brook Bend is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and an extension added in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone, partly timber framed, and features a stone tile roof. The main range is two stories tall with an attic and consists of three rooms. The 19th-century extension includes a staircase hall and one additional room, while there is also a two-story back wing and an attached oven house.

The front of the main range has a masonry ground floor with recessed chamfered mullioned windows that have hoods, featuring one, two, and three lights. The upper floor is close studded and has three timber casements. The eastern part of the building includes 19th-century windows with two and three lights, as well as a porch with four-centred arches. The west gable end has two three-light windows and a single light window in the attic. At the back of the main range, there is a cavetto moulded window with two plus two lights and a King mullion. The back wing has a gable end chimney and a step in the masonry at the upper floor level, with ashlar chimney shafts that have moulded caps.

Inside, the two ground floor rooms feature elaborately moulded beams, and there is a large partially blocked inglenook fireplace in the main room. The upper floor’s timber framing is exposed, showing close studding in the main range and square framing in the back wing. The attached 17th-century oven house to the south is made of limestone rubble with a plain tile roof and has a stone fireplace and chimney at the west gable end.
