Description

Kiftsgate is a house, originally three dwellings, dating back to the 17th century, with alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a stone slate roof. The main part of the house is two storeys with an attic, and features a cross passage. An east range is recessed and has chamfered mullioned windows with hood mouldings; three small gables on the upper floor each contain two-light windows. The street-facing gable end has three, four, and five-light windows, the largest of which has ovolo mouldings. There are also two blocked four-centred arched doorways and two two-light windows in the attic gables of the east range. A chimney gable with paired diagonal shafts is located to the east of and above the main range, and a gable chimney is at the east end. The north gable end is similar to the south, but incorporates a 20th-century single-storey outshut. A 20th-century porch extension has been added to the rear corner. Chimneys have moulded caps and string courses, and the gables have cross-roll saddles. The interior was completely modernised in the 20th century.
