Description
Kemble Mill is a water mill that likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with a later 18th-century cartshed added at the west end. The mill is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with dressed stone quoins and has a concrete tile roof. The cartshed features rubble stone for the rear and side walls, with a rendered timber-framed front on the first floor and a stone slate roof.
The building is a single long range of two storeys. The mill has two 20th-century two-light metal casements on the first floor, which have original timber lintels, and a wide boarded door to the left on the ground floor, also with a timber lintel. There is a similar casement on the east gable of the first floor, with raking buttresses at the base flanking a boarded door that provides access to the mill race. Although the former undershot wheel and wheelhouse have been removed, the internal machinery remains, including the joists and boarding of the floors and roof, an upright shaft, a non-bevel spin wheel, and two pairs of stones.
The cartshed consists of three bays supported by squared timber posts carrying a lintel, and it features blocked two and three-light mullioned windows with timber lintels, along with a boarded loft door in the centre.
