Description

SOMERFORD KEYNES - SU 09 NW 8/182 Kemble Mill (formerly listed in Come. ford Keynes Parish) 24.1.85 GV II Water mill. Probably late C17 or early C18 with later C18 cartshed addition at west end. Mill of coursed rubble limestone with dressed stone quoins, concrete tile roof. Cartshed of rubble stone rear and side walls, rendered timber framed front on first floor, stone slate roof. Single long range of 2 storeys. Mill has two C20 two-light metal casements with original timber lintels to first floor, and wide boarded door to left on ground floor with timber lintel. Similar casement to east gable on first floor, with raking buttresses at base flanking boarded door giving access to mill race. Former undershot wheel and wheelhouse removed, but internal machinery survives including joist and boarding of floors and roof, upright shaft, non-bevel spin wheel and 2 pairs of stones. Cartshed of 3 bays with squared timber posts carrying lintel and blocked 2 and 3-light mullioned windows with timber lintel. Boarded loft door in centre.
