Description
Broughton Poggs Mill is an early to mid-18th century water mill, later altered and extended in the early 19th century. It now stands disused and includes a mill house. The mill is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with dressed quoins, topped with a stone slate roof, half-hipped to the right bay of the house. It has rebuilt ashlar chimneys, one on the ridge to the left of the house and another to the rear right corner. It is arranged in an L-shape, with the mill wing projecting to the left. The front gable end of the mill has a small door indicating the former wheel location, now removed, and a loft door. The right return side features a segmental stone arch over the mill-race, and an old board door with dressed stone jambs and a flat stone arch. Above the door is a small two-light casement. A skylight is located in the loft.
The two-storey, two-bay mill house has an attic. The right bay is of 18th-century origin. The windows are mostly 20th-century barred wooden casements of three lights, with smaller two-light windows to the first floor on the right and extreme left. A central board door is present. Lower openings have flat stone arches, with the door and the left window also featuring dressed jambs. Upper windows have wooden lintels. A skylight is found in the left bay. The right gable end mirrors the casements, and the rear has a projecting stair turret with small windows. The mill retains original machinery, including the main gear wheels.
