Description
The Coach House is a former coach house and stables for Broughton Hall, dating from around 1800, and has incorporated older features. It has undergone some 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of squared and coursed limestone with raised ashlar quoins and features stone slate roofs. The gable copings are moulded with shaped kneelers, and the gable on the stable range is topped with a carved stone urn finial.
The building has an L-plan layout, with the stable range to the east consisting of two storeys. The ground floor includes four tall stone cross windows with flat stone relieving arches above. There is a central boarded door with a rectangular fanlight, raised stone surround, and a similar relieving arch. The upper storey features three old two-light windows with chamfered stone mullions and diagonal leaded glazing.
Projecting to the left is a two-bay coach house range, which is now a single storey with an attic. The right return displays depressed arches of dressed stone with keyblocks over former coach entries, which are now blocked with 20th-century rubble walling and windows. A 20th-century door is located in the left arch, and above are gabled eaves-line dormers with wooden cross casements, where the upper lights are leaded. The building is included for its group value.
