Description
The Old Bakehouse is a house dated 1626, as indicated by a tablet in the central gable. It has been altered and refenestrated in the late 18th to early 19th century, with some refurbishment in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble limestone, featuring dressed quoins and stone slate roofs. It has rendered and brick ridge chimneys on stone bases, with moulded strings, and the left shaft has a moulded capital.
The house is two storeys high and has three bays, each with a different construction style. The gabled central bay contains boxed 3-pane sash windows with wooden lintels and dressed stone jambs. The left bay also has similar sashes, with two windows on the ground floor. The right bay features 3-light wooden casements with similar jambs; the lower window has a restored shaped stone lintel, while the upper window has a wooden lintel. To the left of the right bay is a flush-panelled door leading to a through passage. This door includes a fanlight, a moulded stone surround with a Tudor hoodmould, and a high stone slab hood supported by wooden brackets.
There is a single-storey 20th-century extension at the left end of the house. The rear of the building has a gabled stair turret in the central bay and lean-to extensions on the outer bays. Inside, there is a large fireplace with a 4-centred stone arch in the central bay, and an 18th-century dog-leg stair with turned balusters.
