Description

Filkins Museum is a former pair of cottages, with the right side once used as an outbuilding, now serving as a museum. Attached to the left end is a village lock-up, and the front features remains of stone slab fencing. The left cottage dates from the early 18th century and was altered in the 20th century, while the right cottage is from the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble. The left cottage, which was originally thatched, now has a mid-20th century stone slate roof and a large rubble stone chimney on the right with stone slated offsets. It was formerly one storey and attic, with two bays. The ground floor has openings with ammonites set into the wall. The roof has two 20th-century skylights.

The right cottage has a Welsh slate roof and is taller, originally one storey and attic but with the floor removed in the 20th century. It also has two bays, with the right bay blind and the left featuring a later lean-to. A tall entry was formerly present but is now blocked with rubble walling and has a two-light casement. There is a central board door with a 20th-century wooden lintel and two-light barred wooden casements with older wooden lintels in the right gable end. Lean-to extensions at the rear, dated 1975, are not of special architectural interest.

The lock-up is situated in a narrow space between the walls of the left cottage and The Old Post Office. It is covered by a roof of large stone slabs and has an old board door at the front with studs, strap hinges, and a small square grille. Inside, there is a stone bench at the far end. The building is included for its group value.
