Description
Filkins Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 18th century, with a front wing that was remodeled in the early 19th century. The front is made of squared and coursed limestone, featuring raised ashlar quoins and window surrounds, while the rest of the building is constructed from rubble stone. It has stone slate roofs, with flanking ashlar chimneys that have moulded cornices. The building is arranged in a U-plan, consisting of two storeys and an attic, and has three bays. The windows are three-pane sashes set in raised and moulded stone surrounds with keyblocks. There are two gabled roof dormers that contain two-light wooden casements. The central entrance features a 20th-century six-panelled door set within a moulded stone architrave, complete with a moulded keyblock, a stone open pediment hood supported by shaped scroll brackets, and semi-circular stone steps.
At the rear of the left bay, there is an earlier wing that is one storey and has an attic. This wing features 17th to early 18th-century chamfered stone mullion windows with Tudor hoodmoulds. The two-storey wing at the rear of the right bay has one similar window on its right side. Inside, the front right bay contains a wide fireplace with a depressed stone arch, while the left bay has an altered fireplace with a flat stone arch. The central staircase, dating from the early 19th century, has two turned balusters per tread, shaped scroll tread ends, and fluted square newel posts. The attic storey of the rear left wing, which was formerly used as a cheese room, retains wooden brackets for shelving. The rear right wing was previously used for making cider.
