Description
Giles Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early to mid-18th century, with an extension added in the early 19th century. The building has a small early 19th-century wing that forms an L-shape. It is constructed from coursed rubble limestone, with the early 19th-century wing featuring a front made of squared and coursed stone and a rendered rear wall. The roofs are covered with stone slates, and there is an external rubble stone chimney on the front gable end of the original wing.
The house is two storeys high, with the original wing consisting of two bays. It has early 20th-century two-light wooden casements with old wooden lintels on the right side. There is a central blocked doorway that has a similar casement and shares a simple stone slab hood with a 20th-century door in the early 19th-century wing. This wing projects from the far bay and has one similar casement on the first floor, while the ground floor has been altered to include a later 20th-century two-light wooden casement.
Attached to the right end of the wing is a 20th-century single-storey roughcast extension that connects the house to a former outbuilding, which is now a garage. Inside the original wing, there is a very small moulded stone fireplace that is likely re-used and dated "WAFS August the 6: 1612." The ceiling beam and joists in the same room are slightly chamfered and stopped. Additionally, there is an early 19th-century fence made of upright limestone slabs attached to the front corner of the house.
