Description

The Abbey is a house dating from 1637, with extensions and alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from squared limestone rubble, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings. The plain tiled roof has stone coped gables with elaborate stepped pinnacles, likely added in the 19th century. The building has a cross plan and is two stories high with a garret, displaying a five-bay front. The left two bays are from the 19th century, with the left end bay and the second bay from the right being advanced and separately gabled. In the angle, there is a 20th-century panelled door with an overlight. To the left, there is a 19th-century three-light window with a cornice and a four-light window. The advanced bay contains a 19th-century three-light mullioned window, followed by a further two-light window. On the first floor, there are three three-light windows, and above the door is an original two-light window. Each gable features a single three-light window, and above one gable is a datestone in ashlar with raised letter carving reading "WD MD ANO DNI 1637". All windows have ovolo moulded mullions and cornices.

Inside, there is a fine 17th-century dogleg stair, partly reset, with two flights, panelled newels topped with ball finials, a moulded handrail, and large bobbin balusters. In the right-hand bedroom, there is a deeply moulded beam with elaborate strapwork stops, and two additional beams in the rear wing have large ogee and triangular plaque stops. The roof is constructed with clasped purlin pegged oak. The house is situated on an earlier moated site.
